Money Smart Week (R) 2013

This year, Ruidoso Public Library hosts Money Smart Week (R) April 2nd through 5th.  The slate of presenters has some of last year's most popular events and a few new faces, too.

Tuesday, April 2, from 10-11 am, Vera from First National Bank will speak on How to Apply for a Mortgage.  If that time does not work for you, or you have more questions, try a different perspective on Wednesday, April 3 at 4pm.

Later on Tuesday, April 2, from 11 am to noon, Debra Hendricks, of New Mexico’s Aging and Long Term Services Department, will present "Extra Help," a program to reduce your Medicare expenses. 

Wednesday, April 3, 10 am, begins with Credit Scores: what they are, what affects them, and how to improve them with Billy Jones of Ruidoso Credit Union. I saw this presentation last year and thought it could be useful for most anyone.  Then at 4pm Wednesday is the second mortgage application explanation by Lorri McKnight of City Bank New Mexico who will present a different perspective.

On Thursday, April 4, at noon, Rachel Weber of New Mexico’s Workforce Solutions offers Frugal Living Tips to Save Money.  Then at 4:30 pm, also on Thursday, April 4, Rutalee Todd-Jernigan of the Farm Bureau Financial Services will help you increase your financial smarts.  Come with any questions you have.

We wrap up Friday at noon with Ismael Camacho one of the state’s Assistant Attorneys General.  Mr Camacho presents “Don’t Get Burned” to help you explore the risks of identity theft and scams, including how to protect yourself.

Near the top of the page, you will find a bar of tabs, similar to the tabbed, manila folders of filing cabinets and yesteryear.

The second tab, from the left, reads, "Calendar."  This tab will show you a calendar of events scheduled at the library.  Here you can find whose art is on display, when the program begins, and a short summary of what the event might include.

You can subscribe to updates about events and receive emails whenever an event is added or changed.

You can also scroll back in time to recall a past event or artist, too.

Another option for looking up current events at the library is the next tab, "Library News."  Clicking on the tab itself will open the library's blog, which you are reading here.  Moving the mouse over the tab without clicking will display a menu of options: Newsletter, blog, new titles, and What's Happening.

This is Sharon's forte.  Sharon Stewart builds the Newsletter each month, pulling together the times, places, and descriptions of events to give you fair warning for planning.  This is the same newsletter available to pick up, printed out, at the front desk, or you may already receive it from Sharon in an email.  If you would like to sign up with Sharon, her email is under the Contact Us tab.  Sharon used to build a spreadsheet of new titles each month, but our new online catalog does that with book covers, too!

Finally, Sharon creates the flyers announcing each individual event and saves them under the What's Happening menu option.  These are PDF files you are welcome to print yourself in case you know someone or someplace that might need a reminder or be interested in attending.

Energy, Taxes, & Groups that meet @ the library

Busy week and weekend ahead!

Tonight is the deadline to file your taxes, or request an extension.

Friday visit the Ruidoso Convention Center for the Lincoln County Renewable Energy Conference and Trade Show.  That's April 22, 8am to 5pm, and it's free!  Learn about job opportunities, green building, and energy efficiency.

Saturday is the Lincoln County Solar & Sustainability Tour, 10am-4pm.  Visit businesses, houses, and gardens to see many sustainable activities, buildings, and appliances.  Visit with locals and learn what has worked here!

Ruidoso Public Library has a conference room available for meetings of non-profit groups.  Book clubs, condo associations, the Daughters of the American Revolution, & a mountain biking interest group have read our policy and filed requests to use our conference room.  The room is available during regular hours.  If you have an interested group, please ask a librarian during your next visit.
