Here is a great tutorial for those of you interested in booking travel accommodations online

Priceline:
Priceline is a website for booking travel accommodations online, including flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises, and vacation packages. Its signature feature is "Name Your Own Price", which allows you to submit a partial itinerary, along with how much you want to pay for it. Then, Priceline will match you with a company that accepts your price, and will fill in the rest of your booking details.

More musical merriment all week

Mercy, Music, Mango, and Munchies continue at Ruidoso Public Library this week.

Waynta Wirth presents a singing concert of her private voice students, Wednesday, December 18, at 3pm.  These girls were very popular last year, as can be seen in these photos.

Then, Friday, December 20th, at noon, Fred Kinnan and Debbie Myers play guitar and flute, respectively.

Ruidoso Public Library's gift to our community continues for the next three weeks:  We are waiving lost book charges when you can present the item in good condition.  Call or email if you have any questions.  We mailed notices in November, but appreciate any updates to mailing addresses, emails, or phone numbers to reach you, too.

We had a great turn out at the Tech Petting Zoo, November 22, with excellent questions, curious novices, and friendly participants sharing their devices and experience.  At the library, Sharon has experience with Android touch-screen devices, Kindles, and downloading ebooks and audiobooks to mobile devices.  If you open a new gadget, or are giving one, this year, check with the library for free materials and a little assistance.  Your library card and PIN can open copies of several "For Dummies" or "Missing Manuals" online.

Music, Mercy, Magic, and More at Ruidoso Public Library this December

Sharon, Corey, and the Friends of the Library have organized quite a slate of festivities for December.
Beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, December 10, at noon, ENMU's Choir shares carols.  Then, Wednesday, December 11, at 1:30 pm, Jamie O'Hara presents a magic show for all ages.  Next, on Thursday, December 12, at 4pm, enjoy more music on French horn, when Sharon and three friends fill the library with corno carols.  We wrap up this week on Friday, December 13 (oooooo!) at noon, with Lou Ann Ellison as she sings carols with her piano.

The "mercy" in this post's title is very important.  December is Book Amnesty at Ruidoso Public Library.  What is Amnesty?  In our case, it means we are forgiving overdue fines on long lost books *when* you return them in good condition at Ruidoso Public Library this month.  Please tell your friends.  Maybe they have not been to the library in years because they lost a book once and could not pay off the item to clear the library card and account.  Hopefully, the book has turned up, in which case, bring it to the library and and we can probably waive the charges.

Mango Languages Logo
Sharon offers prizes to promote the Mango Language learning program.  Log on with your library card, learn a seasonal greeting, then visit the library.  When you greet any librarian by saying that phrase, you may enter your name for a chance at a prize.  You may only enter once per day and you will need your library card number to help us update your phone number, in case you win!

More in store next week, too!  Check the calendar, What's Happening, or this blog next week.

Part 3: Making Sense of the Stacks: 700s

The 700s: The Fine and Decorative Arts

Antiques being sold on Colaba Causeway

Melvil Dewey did not have movies, pop music, or RV'ing in his library, but these have joined the 700s since. Antiques, collectibles, graphic novels, and quilting books are also in this section.

The 700s are even more diverse because they also cover boxing (796.8), gambling/card games (795.4), cheer-leading (791.64), and horse racing (798.4).  In short, if it is art (painting), crafts (needlework), music (how-to, lyrics, or memoirs), or sports, it is probably in the 700s.

A tricky topic is architecture and construction.  The artistic design elements are in the 720s but the technical, do-it-yourself books are in the 690s (which I'll cover next week).

Don't forget the Friends of the Library book sale today, 10 am to 3pm!  Shop for like-new books for gifts, classics, favorites, paperbacks, hardbacks, and magnetic cassette-tape audiobooks.
